Wasana’s Thai- Fresh and healthy street food

By  Kris Dean

Wasana’s Thai food cart, located at the corner of Eighth and
Riverside, is the newest addition to a growing variety of food choices for RCC
students and staff.  Wasana’s Thai is open Monday through Friday from
10:30 to 5, serving flavorful, freshly prepared, high-quality, and inexpensive
dishes rapidly to appreciative customers.

Owner Wasana’s, no last name given, worked for 18 years at
Ali’s Thai Kitchen restaurant before starting her own business.  She
enjoys working for herself and has worked at fairs and events for the last two
years before parking her food cart at the busy corner across from the HEC
building for the last two months.

The menu features traditional Thai drinks like Thai iced tea
and coffee for $2.00 and other drinks for $1.50.

Dishes like garlic chicken, vegetable tofu, barbeque chicken
and rice, sweet Thai chicken with peanut sauce, phad-si-ou (strips of just
cooked chicken on top of vegetables and rice noodles), and yum-nu (barbequed
sirloin, cilantro, onion, lime, other Thai spices and curried rice) are all
priced at $6.

The vegetable tofu dish was beautiful; the bright
green broccoli and impeccably fresh green beans, the deep orange of
flower-shaped carrot slices, and the snowy white tofu made a striking contrast
to the base of purple-tinted rice.  Wasana’s calls the rice “black” rice,
and said that it is healthier than plain white rice.  Topped with peanut
sauce and Wasana’s homemade chili sauce, it was a filling and nutritionally
superior meal that tasted and looked delicious.

All dishes are rapidly prepared to order right in front of
the customer.  Special dietary needs can be accommodated easily. Wasana’s
uses only white meat in her chicken dishes and the freshest vegetables.
She said she believes in using the highest quality ingredients for the best
tasting food, and the food reflects that care of preparation and
presentation.  Wasana’s Thai is a delight to the eye and the palate, and a
welcome addition to the food choices for RCC students.
