RCC student dies in car crash

A Rogue Community College student was killed as a result of a rollover crash just north of Grants Pass in mid-October.

Sabrina Kasiah, 20, was ejected from the Toyota 4Runner when it left the mountain road and rolled down a 50-foot embankment, said Mike Shaw of Rural/Metro Fire Department.

The crash was first reported at 2:35 a.m. on Oct 14, Shaw said.

Kasiah was not wearing a seatbelt, said Sgt. Jeff Proulx of the Oregon State Police.

Shaw said that four others were in the car, including the driver, Casey Payne, 20, when the car rolled.

When law enforcement arrived, the driver and three passengers were standing on the road, Shaw said. Kasiah was found near the vehicle, Shaw said.

Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said that alcohol is likely a factor in the crash, according to a Grants Pass Daily Courier article.

“This is absolutely alcohol-related,” Gilbertson said in the article.

Gilbertson said the group had been attending a party further up the road, but had no information about criminal charges, saying the crash was “under investigation.”

Kasiah was a 2010 graduate of Grants Pass High School and was taking classes at RCC. She is survived by her parents, Shawn and Therese, two brothers and a sister.
